All Vocabulary Words Are Not the Same in Your Classroom

Updated: Jul 23

When we teach content in any area, there are vocabulary words that are essential for learners to know in order to be successful. It is important to know that there are four main forms of vocabulary: oral (spoken or heard) and print (read or written).

In the typical classroom, receptive print vocabulary is often the only vocabulary form used when it is essential to incorporate each of the vocabulary forms in instructional delivery.

Vocabulary Word Form 1: Receptive Oral vocabulary

Listening. These types of vocabulary words are the words we understand when others speak or read aloud to us.

Vocabulary Word Form 2: Receptive Print vocabulary

Reading. These are vocabulary words we understand when we read them.

Vocabulary Word Form 3: Productive Oral vocabulary

Speaking. These are vocabulary words we use when we talk to others.

Vocabulary Word Form 4: Productive Print vocabulary

Writing. These are vocabulary words we use when we write.

As you are delivering systematic vocabulary instruction and intervention with your students, keep these forms in mind so that you can target the specific learning needs of everyone in your classroom for their best success.
